Egyptian Dance Trainer

Nourhan is devoted to teaching Middle Eastern dance as an art form~ as opposed to a form of exercise!   Ms. Sharif is a popular teacher both for her technique and her personable way of communicating with students! Her class design is unusually comprehensive including: technique, musicality, cultural awareness, context, costuming, & stage presence. Knowledgeable and accessible, she is a leading instructor in New York City, where she prepares students to perform Mr. Sharif's choreographies. Nourhan has  taught on nearly every continent and has performed globally to acclaimed audiences.  She is a faculty member of the Arab Dance Seminar which presents annually and is the Executive Producer  of the Sharif Annual Weeklong which takes place in NYC every July for the last 12 years ! This July 2009 Nourhan features Mohamed El Hosseny & Karim Nagi for the first time ever in the USA !
Nourhan is frequently engaged as a workshop instructor nationally and internationally, but is currently focusing on her New York projects with regards to teaching. She is intent upon presenting Egyptian properly, as it should be conceived, taught, and performed. Considered the perfect expression of  Her ex-husband Yousry Sharif's complex technique and eloquent style,..( He used to put the music on and she would dance giving him inspiration )  she gives her dance students a solid foundation for growth in Middle Eastern dance technique which she has made her own dancing since a baby in diapers !

All Nourhan's endeavors are designed to further, and disseminate, the art of Middle Eastern dance. She believes that Middle Eastern dancers are most successful when they know the cultural foundation of the dance and its music: Audiences respond best to dancers who are aware of Middle Eastern culture, those who are well-versed in the folkloric genres that gave rise to the Oriental style. She strives to impart her knowledge of the culture and folklore to her students, knowing that this awareness gives the dancer longevity and makes him/her stand out!  Thus, Dancers currently trained by Nourhan  are the best Egyptian Dancers NYC  has to offer !  Nourhan is busy writing a book, teaching on Skype, lecturing , designing Sharifwear & teaching in NYC at youshouldbedancing.net as well as in Queens at Astoria School of Fine Arts!

As Producer..

An acclaimed and experienced producer, Nourhan has sponsored numerous seminars/galas with master instructors in Boston, MA; Providence, RI; and New York City, which specifically include her creation of the annual Arts-in-the Park Festival, an ethnic and traditional waterfront dance festival in Providence, RI; La Danse Orientale Middle Eastern Dance Troupe (as Director) and The Annual  Sharif Week-long Summer Festival Workshops & Gala Shows (as Executive Director, from 1998 to the present) which hosts dancers from around the globe!

In addition to sponsoring and producing numerous concerts with renowned Middle Eastern artists on an international scale, Nourhan continues to produce highly-acclaimed, intelligently-conceived, and artistically-constructed DVDs & CDs suitable for professionals, students, and dance aficionados. A partial list includes original compositions by Aboudi Badawi and Tony Chamoun; Yousry Sharif’s & Nourhan Sharif’s music collections, produced in Egypt; and video/DVD productions of  Yousry Sharif’s choreography & Nourhan’s instructional works. Nourhan’s video “Introduction to Belly Dance Technique” won the 2002 Giza Academy Award in the Instructional Category. Yousry Sharif’s “Fifth Annual Oriental Dance Gala,” a video co-produced by Nourhan, received The Giza Academy of Music and Dance Legends Award in 2004.

Nourhan's CDs were recorded and produced in Egypt with the exception of Nourhan Sharif Raks Sharqi Volume 1 which Aboudi Badawi  of Tripoli, Lebanon composed for Nourhan as a personal gift  here in the states!  Her Cds are not carbon-copies or remakes: she carefully selected composers and musicians to record original and new music from Egypt, whose production values they overseen and edited. The compilations are classic, contemporary works beyond compare to the majority of ordinary productions available on the current market. Recognizing the lack of great dance music, Yousry & Nourhan  focused on this aspect of their multifaceted contributions, which frequently are accompanied with DVDs of their choreographies.  Latest ventures for Nourhan  include  an instructional CD series on rhythm tools for the dancer with famed tabla-artist, Karim Nagi (volumes 3 & 4), Aboudi Badawi (Volume 2), & Ashraf Zakaria (Volume 1).  She is currently managing Egyptian Born Superstar Mohamed El Hosseny's North American Events 2010 !
